And, deep down, there is an unwillingness to believe that the world is as bad or as random as it is. It seems so wrong, too wrong to accept.

We might find consolation, solidarity, if our culture addressed this fundamental angst. But instead, but instead... well, turn on your TV, read your newspaper, read the adverts everywhere that are supposed to excite and motivate you. One feels more alone, seeing the misery everywhere, and seeing it failing to be addressed. As if not to think, not to feel, not to care is the healthy attitude. Or, rather, to think, feel and care only about what doesn't matter. As the pain accumulates privately.

I don't believe the world is bad, random, yes, but 'bad' is just a value judgement based on one's beliefs, isn't it?

I do agree that the way we address pain and suffering is screwed up, but what can we possibly do?

Happy good. Pain bad. Exorcise pain. Exorcise those in pain. Then all be happy. Happy good. TV say so.

I think everything is utterly awful at the moment. My mind is full of dead monkeys and photographs of the disappeared pinned to walls.

But then it has been a hell of a week.

I shall be back to my sunny disposition next week.

Ani: Hello! I think we all make value judgements based on our beliefs all the time. If only the objective was legitimate there couldn't be much self-expression. I think we hope that our fundamental beliefs are shared with others. To me bad is what creates unhappiness, especially deliberately so.

What I would like is a culture which acknowledges our pain, and then seeks to help us feel better, in a deep and honest way.

Ben: Hello! Yes, quite.

Unreliable: Hello! I'm sorry. Is there anything I can do to help?
